From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 935 Date: Tuesday, June 10, 2003 8:41 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 935 Tueseday June 11, 2003 New Security Measures By Joe Boling OK, a short column today - I'm trying to get ready for Memphis, and my computer decided tonight was the time to quit running WordPerfect 6.0a, my preferred word processor for the past nine years. I tried reinstalling it from scratch, and even that did not work; some glitch that I had on my old computer finally showed up on this one, too, and the program will not initialize. Furthermore, I can't turn off the curly quotes in WP9, so will have to hand-massage the text after I transfer it to AOL; some may get through. The subject for today - infra-red sensitive inks. The descriptions of the new US notes (with color tints) that was published in Coin World mentioned the use of IR inks on the backs, an aid to the blind (don't ask me how they can see IR but not visible light, but that's what the claim is). The article said that these IR inks are already in use on current notes. Does anyone have an appropriate lamp for examining notes for IR inks? Apparently this is supposed to be easy to do, because the feature is supposed to be accessible to the handicapped people for whom it is intended. Then, after obtaining a lamp for looking at US notes, take that same instrument and turn it to MPC/AMC and see what can be discovered. I notice that no mention was made of UV properties for the tints of the new US notes, but I'll bet there will be some. Just as MPC were on the leading edge of UV security features, it would not surprise me to learn that there was some IR element on MPC decades ahead of the US notes. Does anyone know? And speaking of lamps, although ANA has purchased some UV lamps for classroom use, I also obtained a quantity of them from a recent clearance sale. Anyone coming to the summer seminar (or Memphis, if you let me know by Wednesday night) who still needs a portable UV lamp, see me (until four are sold at $14). One at a time at this price, please (no wholesale) - let's spread them out. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== After taking a hit for inefficiency yesterday, I recalled some numismatic horror stories that I have never shared. Never thought that I would have a hook to use them. All publications and some authors will remain anonymous. About eight years ago, an article appeared in a respected publication about Allied military marks. It was a good to great article. I wrote a letter to the author with some questions and comments. He replied that he was amazed to see it published because he had sent it 10 years earlier. Does the section in World War II Remembered on Japanese war bonds amaze you? It should. Here is why Japanese and other war bonds are in the book. Joe Boling had been studying the Japanese bonds for many years. He had prepared a major manuscript on the subject and submitted it to a major numismatic publication. Then he waited, waited, and waited some more. Ultimately, he complained and was paid for the article. Then he waited some more. We had considered including the bonds in the book anyway, but by the time that we were ready to go to work on the book, the article had not been published so we figured that we really must include all of the bond material. The article was never published. In the 1980s I wrote three humor pieces about coin collecting (as opposed to paper money collecting). The first was on the BS grading system. That was the Bag State grading system. I cannot even recall the second article, but the third one was on SCAMS. The Scientific Coin Analysis and Marketing System was going to revolutionize the industry. SCAMS seems to have been a little too hot for the publication. They sat on it. I waited. Eventually I complained. They stalled. I waited. Joe was luckier than I was, I did not get paid. It was never published. One of the first articles that I wrote was in the 1970s when I became infatuated with MPC replacements. I sent the article to a journal where the editor broke the article into two parts (I can be a bit windy). The second part was never published. These stories are not meant as an excuse for our (my) poor performance as editor in this regard. In fact, it proves Mr. Bergers point (Gram 934). Submissions are important and to the people who send them in, they are very important. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, WOW, I had no clue the power that the gram has, since you ran that article my phone hasn't stopped ringing?? if you want to get attention for your numismatic items put them in the gram!
