From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 941 Date: Tuesday, June 17, 2003 11:27 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 941 Tuesday June 17, 2003 MPC Newsletter Debuts By Doug Bell I would like to take this time to announce the publication of a price guide on U.S. Military Payment Certificates. This is a RETAIL price list that will reflect the market trend of U.S. MPC and will provide the most complete pricing and detailed information available anywhere. Information form auctions and sales will be continuously input and calculated for the most informative pricing on regular and replacement issues. Publishing of new list will be as the market allows, but is planed as a quarterly. There are 2 catalog numbers (Schwan and Pick) side by side for quick reference eliminating confusion. Multiple printing information with serial number ranges, as well as a contact list of top paper money dealers. The name of this report is "The Planchette Report" named after the paper used in the printing of U.S.MPC. The WW II P a p e r M o n e y D a t a B a s e is tied in to the pricing structure and when updated re prices all note's in the database to the most current pricing. This feature enables the database user to keep track of his notes entered into the database at the current price. The first issue was distributed at the Memphis paper money show and was warmely received. Copies of issue number one of The Planchette Report are available for 5$ + 1$ shipping on a per issue basis. Copies can by ordered using PayPal at http://www.papermoneyworld.net/planchette/planchette_report.htm. Proceeds go to Maintaining and enhancement of the database and 10% of moneys received well be donated to the Military Numismatists Scholarship Fund Supporting the Military Money Seminar at the American Numismatic Association Summer Seminar on the Campus of the Colorado College Colorado Springs, Colorado United States of America. WW II P a p e r M o n e y D a t a B a s e and The Planchette Report are both features of www.papermoneyworld.net http://www.papermoneyworld.net/planchette/planchette_report.htm Memphis Report By Joe Boling One event that occurred at Memphis for which I recall seeing no pre-publicity was distribution of the inaugural issue of The Planchette Report, a 24-page newsletter written and published by papermoneyworld webmaster Doug Bell. Volume 1 number 1 contains some short articles (for which he could use a hard-nosed editor) and many advertisements, but is composed mostly of a twelve-page listing of current values for all MPC emissions (less Series 100). The most interesting aspect of the listings is that values of replacement notes are given for every 8000-sheet run, with values of replacements showing disparities in value of up to ten times for the same note and grade, depending on the print run involved (for instance, in series 541 50 cent pieces, $75 for a VG of some runs, and $750 for a VG of other runs). I assume this is related to the frequency of notes from each run as reflected it his master data base (containing almost 13000 note reports). I would like to see a discussion of how these values are derived, because I don't believe there is enough data available from retail and auction sales to make these kinds of pricing observations (how many 541 50-cent replacements have you seen change hands this year?). He reprints (without attribution) the IBNS grading standards. I would love to see dealers in US notes (including MPC) adhere to these standards, but how many actually do? He has an unfortunate typo in the definition of a very good note: it says "A note in the VG condition may still have an overall unattractive appearance." It is supposed to say "not unattractive." To some extent, the data in his data base are unreliable because of the lack of control over the grades that are entered by note owners, and reports of the total market value of notes recorded are similarly uncertain. Let's move on to my Memphis experience. One thing I acquired is my first counterfeit of a Bank of England white fiver that is NOT an Andreus(Andrew)/Bernhard product. The "watermark" in this note is die embossed, rather than being manufactured in the paper. The watermark is also missing many of the extraneous curved lines that appear in the originals (such as the line leading to the pediment of the letter N that is used as a first-cut separator for Bernhard pieces). But when held to the light, the watermark is quite visible. Usually an embossed watermark, because it does not actually change the thickness of the paper, almost disappears when held to the light. I believe the embossing die may have been greased so that it would create translucence wherever it contacted the paper; this would make the watermark appear almost normally vivid when held to the light. The platework on this piece is not nearly as nice as even the poorest Bernhard pieces; poor Britannia is very ugly. There are also differences between digits in the serial number; the numeral 3 appears twice, and the two are different. In addition, the exact same difference appears in the second serial number, leading me to conclude that the printer used a single five-digit block of type and printed the number twice, once on one end and again on the other. More another day. Scholarship Donations Flow Collectors and dealers at Memphis were generous in giving material for the 2004 military money scholarship fund. Project coordinator Marcus Turner reported that the following individuals donated money or material for 2004 scholarships. Al Glaser RA Medina Warner Talso David Seelye Russ Walsh Joe Boling Harold Kroll Pam West Additional donations of money or material are always welcome and are for the good of the hobby. I discouraged him from doing this. Not because I think that it is not a good idea, but because he is doing so much now, that I did not want him to take on any more projects. Furthermore, I am acutely aware of the punishing deadlines in periodical publishing. I also anticipated that Doug would want my help—and that I would want to help him—and I have the same problems that I was hoping that he would avoid! Doug asked me to write an introduction to the first issue which I agreed to do, but then did not get done. I think that I secretly hoped that that would slow or dissuade him. Obviously, it did not. Doug has some good ideas and the goals are noble so we should support him. Besides the obvious support of purchasing copies, you can help by entering data in the MPC data base, sending him information and comments, and probably in many other ways. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== David, I will take a set and remember to please save any $1.00 Fest notes you have for my list. Thanks Robert David, Can you reserve me a set? Rumor has it that Fred was a difficult paymaster at Memphis. Any comments on that? Warner Dear Gram, I would like to reserve one of the sets of 13 Mini-fest notes that Seelye created for Memphis @ $25 to the scholarship fund. I understand from his message that this confirmation should go to the gram rather than to him. Let me know if one is available and I will send him (or whomever) a check. Thanks, Ron Waddell Dear Gram, I'll take a set of the Memphis Fest notes. Cheers, Sparky Hello< David S. advised us if we want one of the sets of the Memphis Mini Fest to send a confirmation to the gram and a check to him made out to the ANA Military Scholarship Fund.
