When it comes to collecting MPC, MFC, and WWII related I don't think you could hand pick a better group of individuals. Sure I enjoy seeing all the paper money on display at Memphis, but that is not why I go. And believe me, I don't go to Port Clinton, Ohio in FEBRUARY to try to add a note to my collection. I attend mainly because of the people. This is a great group of very knowledgeable guys who will drop whatever they are doing to help answer a question. It's that exchange of information I look so forward to...of course hearing "bring your paybook" probably has a little to do with it as well. We had two new issues of MFC distributed at Memphis. First was series 031 with MEMPHIS overprint. The series designation for the Memphis notes will be 032. Errors were in abundance, as individuals were being paid with uniface notes, inverted serial numbers, double denominations, wrong overprint, etc. Obviously, it was a last minute decision to create a Memphis series since no one at HQ told the quality control department to be on the lookout for it. No replacements for series 031 were reported....kinda ironic, don't you think? Prior to the start of Memphis, no one knew if a MFC was planned so Dave Seelye knowing a large group of Festers were attending, decided he would produce an emergency issue of notes. Overstamped on 10 centavo Japanese invasion notes, he produced 6 denominations of provisional notes and a regular issue with the same 6 denominations overstamped with regular and UV sensitive inks. This series designation will be 033 and called "Emergency Seelyes" I assume by putting his return address on the back of the provisional notes, he expects you to sell them back to him down the road? We need serial number data from those of you who were paid at Memphis in MFC. If David or myself did not record your serial/position numbers and errors, please send me an email at thetrader.2@cox.net . Also, if you have not yet sent serial/position number data on other Fest certificates from prior events, now would be an excellent time while you're thinking about it. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Guest editorial It is my understanding that there are two ways to collect Fest certificates, by buying them on the open market (either directly via a participant or from a dealer) or by attending the event. While many Fest events are short in duration, a couple of days to even a couple of hours, to me, the ANA Summer Seminar is a week long event, and a person wanting those Fest notes should pay their tuition to the ANA and attend the entire event. I just don’t want the educational experience of the students, especially those that are neither Festers nor Gramsters, to become secondary to the collection of the Fest notes. Instead, perhaps the paymaster should donate a couple of complete sets to the ANA YN auction so that those not attending can have an agent purchase the notes on the secondary market for their collection. Sparky (Mark Watson) =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, I was just reading in today's gram about the infra red inks that Guy A. and Joe B. have been batting around for the past couple of weeks and would like to offer the following observation: I am sure that you have heard of BluBlocker (tm) sun glasses? Well, just look at the backs of the current $20's with these glasses on, and you can plainly see the bands of ink change color from green to black and back to green. I don't know if this will work with other amber lens glasses or not, but if you have a set of shooters glasses with the yellow tint, give them a try. I would be interested in hearing any reports. (Guy ? ). Jack Hunter Hickman, NE Dear Editor, I have good news for subscribers using AOL! I think I have solved the reception problem. I believe the problem is the result of very aggressive spam filtering. AOL blocks millions of spam messages everyday. It is their number one customer concern right now. They are literally changing their algorithms on a daily basis. I think we have been swept up in this battle against the dark side. I am using AOL version 8.0. Others may have to adjust accordingly. First, I went to "Mail Controls" and looked to see if I had inadvertently blocked "mpcgram@yahoo.com." I had not. But I removed (unblocked) two spam addresses that started "mp." I did this several days ago and have received the last three grams with no problems. Could just two letters be sufficient to block a message? I don't know, but cause and effect seems to indicate so. Next, I had an on-line chat with an AOL technician. He advised me that it was possible (probable?) that one AOL subscriber blocking a message address could affect some (all?) other AOL subscribers. So, all AOL subscribers should check their spam filtering selections (there is an alphabetized list under "Mail Controls") and see if they have inadvertently blocked the gram. I also recommend doing as I did and unblock any addresses with "mp" as the first two letters.
