From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 950 Date: Sunday, June 29, 2003 6:59 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 950 Sunday June 29, 2003 Series 1944 Dinar Issued In the opening hours of the military money seminar, Allied Fest Certificate Series 1944 dinar was issued and paid to students, faculty, and others with pay books. The exchange rate at the beginning and end of the day was one to one. New students at the seminar started the experience by learning about pay operations. As part of the training the students practiced the ritual with training AFC. An administrative problem arose when the finance officer responsible for delivering pay books to the seminar for the new students reported that his fighter had been shot down enroute to the seminar. He narrowly escaped capture and swam to shore. Thereafter he further evaded capture by crawling several miles through gravel in cold driving rain. Through all of this he protected the pay books, but upon being rescued in a daring helicopter operation, some sinister source swapped brief cases with him and the pay books were lost. Some of the details of this story are believed to have been exaggerated, but no additional details are known. The dinar consists of the following denominations: 1, 2, 3, 10, 20, and 30 dinar. The notes are similar in appearance to the Series 100 C yen that were eliminated a year ago at Colorado Springs. Shortly after the issue of notes, David Klinger reported finding a 2 dinar note that had been raised to 20 dinar. Initially, students thought that it was an error, but careful examination confirms that it is a raised note. All students were warned and headquarters was warned of the problem. Rumors spread that Series 1944 might be withdrawn, but no comment was forthcoming from headquarters. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Things are really jumping here at the seminar. More news is breaking. I will not be able to keep up with it. I hope that others here will send in their reports, ideas, comments, and even complaints. In addition to class, Joe Boling was on tap last night to perform Joe Boling, the Play and tonight is giving a seminar wide class on counterfeiting. I expect to really put him to work tomorrow! A real highlight of the day for me was to visit the Rendezvous with Destiny World War II exhibition at the ANA museum. In spite of helping with it and talking about it here (a lot), this was my first time to see it. I was impressed—and very pleased. I am going back and will probably report in more detail at that time. The last day for the exhibit is August 15. We will start in the hallway! Editor Dear Gram, What a great first day at the ANA Summer Seminar! Waking up at 4:00 AM to get to the airport on time was the only bad part of the day. The dreaded airport security was as bad as I was expecting and the flight were smooth most of the trip. It was great to see two young men at the foot of the escalator to Baggage Claim at the Colorado Springs Airport holding up ANA signs to greet those attending the seminar. A shuttle took me right to checking and reservations. It could not have been easier. Thank you ANA. Spent the day getting to know the area and eating too much food at the huge spread for the welcoming buffet. The evening was topped off with Fred arranging the whole group of attendees (well over 100) just before the opening ceremony wishing Judy (the Boss) "HAPPY ANNIVERSARY" in loud unison. The evening was capped off with a Joe Boling performance of 'The Play' A must see event that was most enjoyed by all. A few pictures taken in the early morning are included. Dick F.
