From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 953 Date: Tuesday, July 01, 2003 10:40 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 953 Tuesday July 1, 2003 Pay Books Arrive The missing paybooks arrived today at the summer seminar so that the deserving students could be paid. That is the good side of the paybook news from the seminar. Another prominent numismatist arrived with her husband to be paid. They had their challenge coins (which they had not had a day earlier), but they only had one paybook. The wife picked up pay by cleverly using her husbands paybook. Then she claimed that she should be paid again. Of course she was not paid. We will not reveal the name of the wife of the president of the American Numismatic Association. (Shame, shame.) Gramster-interest material in ANA YN auction. By Joe Boling OK, here's what is offered in session I of the 14th annual YN Scholarship auction at ANA summer seminar (fest-related lots only - MPC were looked at for position 8 notes but not otherwise noted; a lot of six high-bore MPC and a LOGEX note were withdrawn to be re-lotted as individual lots, and were not available for inspection tonight). What follows are direct quotes from the auction catalog. D119. Hey David Seelye, this lot's for you! A specimen set of Allied Fest Certificates from this year's ANA Summer Seminar. The lot includes 1 & 2 Dinar notes from both Series 1944 and 1944A, along with single examples of the 3 Dinar, 10 Dinar, 20 Dinar, 30 Dinar and 50 Dinar Notes. We guarantee you will not find another set like this! (OK, so maybe "guarantee" is a strong word - you never know what Fred Schwan and Joe Boling have up their sleeves!) D120. So maybe you got outbid on that last lot, but don't despair! Here are a few more Allied Fest Certificates - 2 10-Dinar notes (Series 1944 and Series 1944A) along with a 20-Dinar note from Series 1944A. D121. Now for some interesting examples of specimen Allied Fest Certificates. This lot contains two notes we're not sure how to classify... Essays? Errors? First is a Series 1944 1-Dinar note which appears to have the underprinting overprinted. Also included is a 3-Dinar note which has the numeral "3" in blue. All other 3-Dinar notes this cataloguer has seen have the numeral printed in yellow. D122. A rare example of a specimen 50-Dinar Series 1944 Allied Fest Certificate. This denomination has never been officially released into circulation. D123. Now onto a circulation example of Allied Fest Certificates - and a replacement note at that! Series 1944A 30 Dinar note, serial number C00000001*. You know David Seelye likes serial number 1... can you outbid him? D161. A must have souvenir card from ANA's 35th Annual Summer Seminar. Number 000019, Post marked [sic] Jul 4, 2003 from Colorado Springs. Military Numismatics since 1930. [This is Harold Kroll's souvenir card for this event - sold for 15 dinars when issued on 30 June 3002.] If Fred gets his inbox cleaned out enough that this message does not bounce, he will send it out in the next gram. I will extend the time I will take agent bids until 1630 local Wednesday (the sale is at 1900). joeboling@aol.com =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== I am in sensory overload. I am having a great time and believe that most if not everyone feels the same. There have been some notable challenge failures. In addition to the failure mentioned in the lead new story a Fester who will not be named failed to bring his coin to the Springs and by his own admission groveled to receive another one. He received another coin but has been toting beverages, ice, coolers and assorted supplies between dormitories and class rooms. He is a real MARK, but his failure has added real spark to the event. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Dear Gram, I can't seem to bring up the memphiszoo pictures. Can you give me another link? Leo Dear Gramsters, How about others, could you open the photos? Eidtor Dear Editor: The Summer Session is in full swing. See the following URL for a few images. http://www.papermoneyworld.net/anaseminar2003.htm Warner Talso Dear Gram, I just put an article on Korean Propaganda Currency on the Internet. I have written on this subject three times in the past in the IBNS Journal, so this article will not be the usual in-depth piece with Pick numbers and other numismatic details. This article is written for the general reader, and in particular the psychological operations trainees at Ft. Bragg. It is a light look at a number of the banknotes we prepared for use in Korea, most all in color. http://www.psywarrior.com/KoreaSCP.html ===== MPC Gram is published by BNR Press and papermoneyworld.com as a free service to the community of military money collectors.
