From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPC Gram 954 Date: Thursday, July 03, 2003 12:09 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 954 Thursday July 2, 2003 ANAFest report By Joe Boling The YN auction saw fierce bidding from an unexpected quarter, as class member Wendell Wolka bid to win on every lot of Allied Fest Certificates, swamping the efforts of Boling with internet bids and Mark Watson, who had a phone bidder on the other end of his cell phone throughout the short run of AFC lots. Prices realized were (check yesterday's gram to see the contents of the lots) (there is no buyer's fee in this sale): lot D119, $725; lot D120, $130; lot D121, $250; lot D122, $225; lot D123, $250; lot D161, $70. During the bidding, Kroll and Seeley were conspicuous in their inactivity. When the dust settled, Harold rose with a satisfied grin and said "We got 'em all." Evidently he and David had engaged Wendell to execute their bids, in an effort to avoid having other gramsters in the room run them up on their lots of interest. A friend from Seattle shook his head at the action on these lots, saying "This is for notes that were only manufactured last week?", which I confirmed to be correct. But after all, the proceeds of this sale (just as for the proceeds of the Rendezvous with Destiny set that sold for $1400 at Fest IV) go to provide scholarships to the ANA summer seminar. There was a new lot announced this morning in an addendum to the catalog, consisting of: a Chambliss set of replicas; a set of 681 replicas postmarked in Colorado Springs (date not specified, and I did not inspect them, but probably identical to the sets distributed to seminar members this week); a booklet of Fest IV canteen chits; and two sets of Fest IV canteen chits signed by the designer. That lot brought $15. The MPC in lot 132, which had been re-lotted overnight, realized (I did not verify the grading, and don't know whether they were graded by the consignor or the YN catalogers): 481 first printing $10 F, $25 661 $5 choice UNC, $17.50 692 $5 F, $35 641 third printing $10 XF, $20 681 first printing $20 XF, $45 692 first printing $20 VG, $20 USAFS Series 560 LOGEX $10 CU, $12.50 As I write (nearly midnight on Wednesday), the poker game is in full swing on the patio outside my door, with AFC dinars trading hands in every pot. The players seem to be oblivious to the potential for an imminent C-day, as the value of the dinar continues to slip (2:1 against dollars at COB today), which is causing the troops to grumble about the eroding value of their pay. There is starting to be a buzz about the minifest scheduled for this weekend. If you are coming, remember to bring a show-and-tell item that will interest your fellow collectors. Fest Dinar Plunges Allied Fest dinar hit an all time low against the US dollar (and MFC 031) Wednesday with a closing rate of two dinar to the dollar. On Sunday it was one to one. The projection for Friday is that the dinar will continue to drop. Dinar users are complaining about the dropping rate and the inability to convert to a more stable money. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== David Klinger is a sharp eyed numismatist. I very carefully call him a numismatist here because he hardly collects MPC, but he has done more research in the past few years than anyone. Today at the seminar he gave a great presentation on the submarine vignette used on MPC series 681 fractional notes. However, that was minor compared to the sharp eye that he used to notice that the agricultural vignette in the tint on the back of MPC Series 701 $1 is the same as that use on the small denomination AM lire! =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Gram, Ref Baltimore ANA convention and Min Fest. As I mentioned earlier in a Gram, Fri morning there is a trip to the BEP and then at 1300 hrs in room 317 there is a Philippine Collectors Forum. A good time for the Mini Fest might be around 1400 hrs or right after that forum is over. I will not be able to attend anything on Sat and also from 1000-1400 on Sat is the currency auction that some Fester's may want to attend. Anyway that is just my suggestion, looking forward to arriving in CS with my paybook. Thanks for keeping us up to date even with your busy schedules. Robert Dear Gram, Per your inquiry. I saw the fotos fine and the subjects never looked better, even if in a zoo!
