From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 961 Date: Wednesday, July 09, 2003 10:04 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 961 Wednesday July 9, 2003 MFC Update By Al Glaser Now that the Seminarians have had a chance to return home and while you are organizing all the varieties of AFC/MFC received, please take a moment to record serial numbers, position numbers, overprint colors, any errors or anomalies and send to thetrader.2@cox.net. Your help is needed more than ever as the Finance Department created more varieties than any other event. Scans of errors and anomalies in jpeg format would be much appreciated for insertion in the new book pages. This plea for help is also directed at those lucky individuals who attended the mini Fest in Colorado Springs on Friday and Saturday. The accusations against the Finance Department and specifically the finance clerk are very disturbing. Lack of security at Fest HQ and the finance clerk has been a well-documented concern of many Festers since finance took over production of all Fest certificates after Fest I. However, co-mingling of personal and Fest moneys goes way beyond security concerns. This could have severe consequences when it comes to the perceived value and rarity of many Fest certificates. It is my hope the Finance clerk will come out of hiding and answer the charges. As a suggestion, the clerk should notify the provost martial that he will place himself under house arrest and confine himself to the PCBH until a formal hearing can be convened. This might be too severe a penalty, since he has not yet been found guilty of any impropriety. In addition, bail should be set at $10,000 MFC. I will be willing to act as bail bondsman for 10%,in MFC, of course (try to throw in a couple of replacements and errors). Stocks of current MFC are in all likelihood low after being paid out at the ANA seminar and mini-Fest, so coming up with the 10% bond might be difficult. If for some reason he decides to pay any part of the bond with any withdrawn issues of AFC/MFC...well you can draw your own conclusions. Mini Fest Experiences By Kevin Nedy Mini fest in Colorado Springs was a great time and it was brought to my attention from Mr..S (That's Mr. Spell checker "Steve Swoish") that after all the time and planning that I put into making my first Intaglio Print fest cards for Mr..K (Harold Kroll) to pass along with his cards was a disaster! Some how I spelled "COLORADO" wrong and even my spell checker didn't catch it? So any of you that has one of these error cards and would like to send it for a replacement card that is spelled right just email me and I will arrange its recovery and replacement with a second printing of the card, (HMM is there two printings of this card?) It will be interesting to see how many will come back (for the rarer corrected card?) or to see how many are kept to rub in my face for years to come? I am hopeful that these will be as collectable as the Harold cards (He always puts out a great card! Thanks!) also I am sure Mr. H will be making a series of these intaglio printed cards soon because he has purchased one of the highly sought after printing plates to give the other Mr..S (David Seelye) a run for his money? Whom of course has cornered the printing plate market too! (no surprise) By buying and owning more plates then even I? Still it was a great and fun time as usual with lots of action at the poker table with them teaching me how to play the wild card games that only true poker champions play? These Mini fests get your blood flowing and always wanting more? Maybe there could be a Summer and a Winter fest so there isn't that big gap between the once a year fest that is already held?? Anyone else like that Idea?? Possibly we could get a bunch of charter boats and have a fishing tournament with prizes "Fish Fest Port Clinton"? Its possible? I hear Fred was a Captain at one time You've all heard his fish stories? 18lb.walleyes of the black hole! Never any photos???? Anyway my email address is kevinn517@hotmail.com should you wish a return on your card sparing me future embarrassment and if there's any interest in a Summer fishing tourney I would be glad to nominate Steve as Chairmen anyone second my motion? Glad to have gone thanks to all of you who made it a great time! =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Fish Fest I? Yes, it can happen—and fishing has been good this year. If you are looking to catch an 18 pound walleye, you should also be sure to stop in the antique malls and shops to pick up that replacement 481 $5 and 591 25 cent that are waiting out there to be found. You could buy a lottery ticket too, but I think that you would rather have the replacements! =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Editor, I recently purchased from Mike Cummings a first edition of the Comprehensive Book of Military Payment Certificates by Fred Schwan. It arrived on July 7th. It is a green covered book with a series 481 $10.00 attached to a page. The book I purchased had an inscription to Mike thanking him for help with prices in the book. It's dated April 1988 and numbered 0020. At the MPCFEST III auction, I purchased a similar green covered 1st edition. It is interesting in that this book also is inscribed to Mike Cummings. It is dated May 1988 and numbered 0024. This bit of information from 15 years ago, shows that the author of the book was not aware that he had already send a book to a contributor in April, so he sent another in May. This information may give some insight to the organization skills of the author. David Dear Editor, In the MPCGram 763 Joe Boling refers to a cold war propaganda note he bought from Colin Narbeth. I too have an example of this piece, although I believe the same design carried three different messages, so I may not have the example that Joe has. I have obtained a full translation of the message on my example. This revealed some interesting information. My neighbor speaks Russian and has worked in Russia for nine years, until his recent retirement. He could not translate much of the message. He sent the Russian draft to a Russian national working in Italy. She is in her 30s and she too was unable to translate much of the Russian. She sent it to her mother in Siberia who, with great difficulty, managed to translate it. She commented on the archaic nature of the Russian grammar used; some even predated her schooling. Were our cold war propaganda translators so old that their Russian pre-dated that then in current usage? I attach a word file with the translation of the propaganda message on my piece; remember that this may not be the same as that on Joe's. Regards, Andrew M. Clark. =========================================== CALENDAR OF EVENTS =========================================== http://calendar.yahoo.com/mpcgram American Numismatic Association Convention.
