From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 964 Date: Sunday, July 13, 2003 8:39 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 964 Sunday July 13, 2003 Rendezvous with Destiny Soars The serial number three set of the Rendezvous with Destiny MFCs changed hands at the summer seminar for an undisclosed amount. The special commemorative military fest certificates for the opening of the ANA Museums Rendezvous with Destiny exhibit in 2002 were issued to people who attended the event. Visitors who were holders of Fest pay books were paid a set of three notes. Others received a single note. Since the event, collectors of MFC have keenly sought sets (and individual notes). The serial number two set sold at MPCFest IV in 2003. Later it was traded for the number one set. In addition to the number three set at the seminar, unconfirmed rumors had two denominations with serial number 12 trading hands. Two different collectors had the 12s, one new collector bought them both. On the Road By Howard Daniel I drove to Iola after Memphis and visited the folks at Krause Publications. It was a great time and I will definitely go back to work on some of their catalogs and do some research in their extensive library. Then to Grand Forks, North Dakota, to visit a Burma specialist; Gillette, Wyoming to visit a Vietnam War (VNW) veteran friend of mine who owns a coin store; and Niel Nielsen in Salt Lake City to sit around and talk about Philippine numismatics. After Niel, I drove to Denver and visited George Fisher of "Fisher's Ding" fame about cash-style coins and then on to Colorado Springs to visit another VNW veteran friend. After Colorado, my next stop was in Goodyear (near Phoenix), Arizona to visit a VNW veteran friend, but I had to cancel visiting Carl Anderson and George Notarpole in nearby Mesa because I was running out of time. My next stop was El Paso, Texas where I looked for a VNW friend but I could not find him in the telephone book. So I continued on to San Antonio and visited with another old VNW friend, and Rick Medina and his son. It was good to finally meet Rick's son and you would like their spacious store! Houston was my next stop to visit a Vietnamese numismatist but he was not available so I drove on to Longview, Texas and stayed the night. In the morning, I visited Sam Flagler, a WWII and Korean War veteran of the Navy Seebees. Did I write Navy? Sam and his wife were the last people I visited before returning to my wife's condo in McLean, Virginia, where I beat her back from her two week trip to Mumbai (old Bombay), India, by five hours. I am now trying to catch up on two tubs of mail and hundreds of emails and other obligations. Now that I am back, let's get this criminal activity taken care of! =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== It is time that I come to grips with the Fest Five scheduling issue. I started this mess after Fest IV when I suggested that the weekend after CPMX might not be the best time for Fest V. In part my opinion was influenced by complaints of conflicts with Long Beach and the ANA min year conventions. It was also influenced by complaints of some Festers about the weather here in Fest city at that time of the year. The conflict situation can never be fully resolved, but we try to do our best. It turns out that in 2004, the post CPMX date does NOT conflict with Long Beach OR with the ANA midyear (Portland, March 25-). However, the dates that I selected in April DID conflict with the Masstericht show that does have a history of participation by Festers. Finally, I was informed (incorrectly) that the post CPMX dates conflicted with the Central States show to which several Festers have strong ties. Fortunately, that problem was a false alarm. We did receive notice from a few candidate Festers who were attracted by a later date. I hope that you will continue to consider the Fest with the March dates. The weekend after CPMX is March 5-7. I think that this is the best time for the Fest in 2004 and ask you to accept and support that. This is not to say that the issue is not open for discussion for 2005 and beyond, but for 2004, I think that this is it. In spite of this, we (I) invite your comments (soon please). =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== Dear Esteeemed Editor, On July 5, I bought an issue of The Washington Times because The Washington Post was sold out at my usual source, so I could solve my daily crossword puzzle addiction. There was an article in it on page E3; "Aussie's efforts honor Death Railway POWs by Denis D. Gray of the Associated Press. Rod Beattie has built the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre to gather together in one place all of the information and names associated with this WWII tragedy. I tried to find an email address and/or website for him and/or his centre but I could not anything. So I started looking around and found "Never Forgotten", The Newsletter of the Taiwan P.O.W. Camps Memorial Society describing Rod's work. Their website is at http://www.powtaiwan.org/sprgsummer01/page8.htm. But they also had a complete address for Rod's museum and an email address as follows; The Thailand-Burma Railway Centre 65/6 Moo Ban Jirakan Kanchanaburi, 71000, Thailand Tel. 034 620050 Fax. 034 622975 Email: railway@access.inet.co.th Both of these places could be of much interest to Gramsters who collect POW "stuff" and I hope this is useful to them. The Master Sergeant Daniel Howard A. Daniel III Dear Gram, I see that we can now add a new title to Schwans name - that of 'Fugitive from Justice'. Since he has now admitted to crossing state lines we can bring the FBI in on the case. I wonder what he must to do to attract the CIAs attention. I guess supplying FEST funds to Ben Laden and the like would do. Howard D., with your contacts can you look into this for the good of the rest of us law abiding MPCers and report your findings to us here in the Gram? Paymaster Gramsters, Do any of you have Vol 1 of Paper Money of Surinam by van Elmpt? I have checked with the ANA / IBNS Library, and they do not have a copy. Looking to borrow a copy for an article I'm writing for the gram. Thanks, Sparky Dear Sparky, There is not better way to get a letter into the Gram than to state that the purpose is ultimately to write an article for the Gram!
