This becomes ever more clear, as we rapidly approach the magic "1K." Mile stones are to be shared with everyone, and I believe that in Gram 1000 everyone should get their "congratulations to Fred" sent in plenty of time to make the printing deadline. What would be great is to see #1000, be the largest Gram ever produced. Each & every Grammster could contribute. It may even be split into "Gram 1000A" & "Gram 1000B,? a second printing of sorts! I know that Fred, will be busy clearing the Yahoo mail box, as the date approaches. #1000 will be "GEM UNC" as were the 999 before...!! Of course your ideas are always welcome. I predict the 1000th Gram to be sent on, or about August 22nd. As of Gram #976, on 7-27-03, there have been 1006 electronic messages sent. The first was "OOPS" message sent on Monday, April 10th, 2000 at 11:44am. It had a mere 16 recipients. On Saturday, April 15th, 2000, the first numbered letter was sent. "MPC Message 1," was sent at 12:23pm. The next day, 21 recipients, received "MPC Gram #2,? at 11:00am. There have been a variety of missed Grams, and many double/extra mailings, over the past 39 months. The following Grams are officially missing, and were never sent. #167, #214, #275, #291, #335, #535, #775, #782, #810, #873, #955, #956, & #957. There have been over 36 extra mailings, too many to list. The more famous Grams include, #23 & #23b "Extremely Important,? #100 "Decigram', #144 "Gross Gram," #150 "Sesquicentennial Gram," #200 "Bicentennial Gram." Of course there have been countless articles of excellence and importance. When you can visit papermoneyworld.net, the MPC Grams are archived under services. My sincere Thanks To Fred, Doug, & the MPC community for putting together a "Great" daily publication. I can not wait for #1000. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Ed certainly has a way with words. Did we really miss 955-957? Sure I sneak a few skips in there, but: 1) I do not expect to be caught, 2) certainly never intended nor hardly can believe that I skipped three in a row. I must have wanted to be caught. Ed is correct, the publication of the 1000th Gram will be an important milestone and a credit to many people. (Since it will be very difficult to figure out just what number is the 1000th Gram, we will be satisfied with calling the Gram with number 1000, the 1000th Gram.) It has indeed been a team effort. Standing out in my mind are the columnists who faithfully (mostly) met deadlines and gave us great information and entertaining reading. In order of number of columns (from most to least) Joe Boling, Larry Smulczenski, Marcus Turner, and Warner Talso deserve special credit. Of course as Ed mentioned, Doug Bells wizardry has been essential to distribution, archiving and many other aspects. Yes it would be a good idea to have kilogram be the biggest gram ever. I will try to figure out some important features for that Gram, but I will certainly be happy to have your input along that line too. Yes, everyone can participate by sending a letter. However, if we get at least two letters (total), we will not publish mere congratulatory letters. You may include the normal congratulations, but you must (please, please, please) include something else. A small point is fine. What was your favorite Gram moment, or Gram, or columnist. Or your least favorite Gram moment, or Gram, but NOT least favorite columnist. Thoughts about the future will also be appropriate. What can or should we change? W Talso [via IM] Dear Gram, At a somewhat certain time in all our lives, we become victims of CRS... [Can't Remember "Stuff"]... Jay in Garrison, Tx, a charter member of the CRS Society... Dear Gram, I have a $25.00 Series E Bond dated 1944, but is not a war bond. It may very well be the one that Ron Waddell mentioned in Gram 976 since I acquired it off Ebay a few months ago. It is printed on the 1943 dated form and is identical to the war bonds except that it is without the War legend on the bottom. The date of issue is 1944, but the stamped issue date is 1953. My analysis is that the original holder either lost the war bond and this replaced it or the original holder died before maturity and this one was issued to a payable-on-death beneficiary, heir or other survivor. Jim Downey Dear Jim, Thanks for the info. In addition to replacement, there is the possibility of reissue. As you know a reissue is necessary to update a bond when some critical information changes. Typically, this is the addition or removal of a beneficiary. Reissues are not made for minor clerical errors or changes of address. On current EE (and I) bonds, it is possible to identify a reissue because it has a coded number starting RI. I was surprised (amazed) to observe that most if not all current reissues are without the PATRIOT legend. This is true even when the original bond was issued in the Patriot period. Eventually, I will have more on this.
