From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 983 Date: Monday, August 04, 2003 9:21 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 983 Monday August 4, 2003 ANA Show Report By Roger Urce We arrived in Baltimore mid morning on Thursday which gave us the rest of the day, all day Friday and a couple of hours Saturday morning to see the show. Since I still collect the round metal things, I managed to add to my Buffalo Nickel and US Commemorative collections. Paper money was well represented and I did have a nice chat with Leo and was able to take a few nice notes off his hands. I also picked up a couple of NAAFI tokens that I need to do a little research on because I can't read the denomination (I guess I need new glasses or a stronger glass). Also found a very nice series 651 $10 note in CU and a couple of Philippine "VICTORY" issues. The Philippine Forum was very informative. Ray Czahor, Neil Shafer and Dr. Pineda provided a lot of history and information and a number of attendees brought along items for "show and tell". Just prior to the Forum I was able to purchase a copy of Neil's 1974 book on Emergency and Guerrilla currency of WW 2. With the speakers and the book I learned quite a bit more about this interesting field. I was also fortunate to win a nice example of a One Peso note from the Mountain Province as a door prize. That coupled with the notes I picked up from Ray on Saturday enhanced my beginning collection. Holding more Forums in the future and using the Gram in conjunction with the Forum were discussed; both ideas, in my opinion are worthwhile. The best part of the show, however, was meeting and talking with fellow gramsters/collectors. It's always nice to put faces to the names we see in the Gram. By the way, during the Philippine Forum, ANA President John Wilson called out the Master Sergeant to present him with an award. Perhaps Howard will provide the details. I did miss seeing Fred and David, but hopefully they will be in Strasburg in September. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== As reports come in about the ANA convention, I miss it more than I did during the event. It sounds like it was a gala event and great show. Frankly, it always is. We have been examining the calendar a little more closely for the past few days and the weeks ahead look a little chaotic. I cannot imagine how I can meet the obligations that I have made. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== letters/submissions for Gram 1000 special double issue should be sent to MPCGram1000@yahoo.com Dear Gram, Just a quick note to make a small correction in the gram. The Meyer collection will start its public exhibition on Aug 28 and continue through November. Steve Dear Steve, What is the correction? Hope to see you there. Too bad that you do not (yet) have a paybook. As listed everyday in the calendar, here is the website for the museum: http://www.hmh.org Editor Dear Editor, You have it right, I did help Loretta, on Friday she was the paymaster and signed pay books with a title of 'PMD' (pay master of the day). The one pay book I signed in her absence was under the title 'APMD' as her assistant. Pay books were not signed on the second day. She was elsewhere as most of the pay envelopes were handed out, she arrived back in time for her pay. She was at the BEP table hoping to win a drawing where she could qualify to purchase a hand pulled souvenir Card. Since it was left to me there were no pay books or signing for pay on Aug 2 Mini Fest. Dick Freyser Dear Gram, The Baltimore mini Fest notes are great. I should have postponed my surgery in order to attend. Please reserve 1 spot at the BBQ table for me. David E. Seelye collector of MFC serial #1, replacements, specimens, and errors Dear David, Seems like a shameless plug to me. Anyway, if you had looked, we had you on the list. Editor Dear Editor, I am in Florida!! Decided suddenly to come here for a couple days before heading back to Tokyo on Wednesday. As previously stated I did very well at the ANA buying and selling better MPC/AMC. Picked up a 691 Set from Ian Marshall. Was good to see him and Leo May. Also had a couple interesting chats with a guy I really admire, "SKI".............he is a most knowledgeable guy and really a nice person, wish everyone was as gentlemanly as him.................he also got a major item from me for his collection. He can tell you what it was but you don't run across one every day.......................... I really had a great ANA. The U.S. market is real, real STRONG! I managed to sell quite a few items and was able to purchase three (3) 651 fractional sets on the floor and was happy to "flop" them there as well. I have a show this weekend in Tokyo and will send you a full report........... Lastly, I was really disappointed at the dearth (?) of MPC guys at such a major event. Most conspicuously missing was that guy who has been around for 30 + years promoting and telling anyone who will listen all about MPC.............none other than Fred Schwan who I first met at my first ANA 29 years ago in the Miami (Bal Harbour) 1974 show.................. Best regards, Mike Dear Gram I plan on being at fest next year since you changed the dates. Neil Shafer Dear Neil, Great, we look forward to having you. Be sure to gets lots of sleep before you get here. You are the eighth new Fester to sign up. We need three more new Festers to register in order to match the first year?s total. Every year we have been able to match the first year total with new Festers. We should be able to do that again this year. Editor Dear Editor, You have sent gram 980 a second time, dated 3 August, exactly the same as the previous iteration dated 1 August. Gram 981 came between them. Joe Dear Joe, No charge for the extra copies. Editor Dear Esteeemed editor, The pass is a great item! The "Part Pay $10 June 10, 1945" has "W.M. Koehler" under it. I wonder if he is related to the Koehler family whose business makes sinks and other plumbing items. If so, maybe he has some records about this time too. The conversion appears to be "400//=352" and followed by a check mark. Below it appears to be "WO M=US" There is more after the "US" but I cannot make it out. I think it is a German Mark to Belgium Franc conversion rate for the 400 to 352, and the "WO M=US" has something to do with the German Mark to US$ conversion rate. It is only a guesstimate, but I hope I am contributing something to the solution. The Master Sergeant Daniel Dear Editor, Many thanks for the interesting report, although it has nothing to do with currency issues, I found it interesting the article on :"...It is a pass issued in June 1945 for Walter Westing to visit Brussels..." so I thought of sending some scans of pass's I found, I hope its acceptable to do that. I think its for liberated Southern Italy, for the British Section. The other pass/permit is issued at the British Embassy in Belgrade, and the last pass is for Thereisienstadt, issued by an SS officer, in last days of the war. Thanking you again for the interesting report, N. Dear N., Thanks for writing and for sending the scans. I have to pick at one point that you make. The Westing pass is indeed (in my opinion) a numismatic item whereas the others, however interesting, are not. The numismatic connection is clearly the stamps on the back of the Westing pass. Such documents frequently have some statement about currency restrictions etc that certainly make them of interest to collectors and in my opinion, make them numismatic items. Of course some disagree, but few would disagree that they are suitable for inclusion in a WWII numismatic collection. Dear Editor Dear Editor, What is a paybook? I got paid once in Dallas but that is all. Do you think I can get paid again this year. I did let everyone get the notes they wanted from my pay envelope. As the BNR said Everyone is heading to Dallas. lyn knight Dear Lyn, During WWII soldiers were issued pay books which they carried on their persons. Pay entries were made in the books as well as on rosters. The books and rosters were reconciled on occasion. The system was necessary because of the extreme flux of the situation as men (yes, and a few women) moved about the battlefields. We have issued paybooks to Festers as part of the learning and fraternal enterprise. Basically, we have only issued paybooks to people who attended major Fest events: Port Clinton Fests and ANA Seminars. People at other events have received notes but are not supposed to receive full pay. [Sounds like you need to turn in some of your pay!]. At the seminar, Festers with pay books are entitled to partial pay if they are not taking a military class. This year a Fester came to the class but without his/her paybook and expected to be paid. The pay officer/instructor refused. One thing is for certain. You had better bring and carry your challenge coin! (Fair warning).
