From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 988 Date: Monday, August 11, 2003 3:39 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 988 Sunday August 10, 2003 The Case of the Plates By Jim Downey Most collectors of military currency are aware that the United States gave the Soviets glass positives of the German AMC. The Soviets printed their own AMC and flooded the country. This issue surfaced in the anti-communist crusade of Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s. The transfer of the plates and other technical information regarding the currency to the Soviets was investigated as part of the ?communist conspiracy? in the United States Government. Several Treasury employees were accused of being communists for their role in transferring the plates to the Soviets including Henry Morganthau, Bernard Bernstein and Henry Dexter White. Eventually, all of the principals were cleared, but their reputations were forever sullied by the accusations. There are several websites that still promote the communist conspiracy theory. The transcripts of all the McCarthy Hearings were released by the United States Senate in January 2003. Some of the hearing transcripts are available on the internet. They can be found at a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/06amay20030700/www.gpo.gov/congress/senate/mccarthy/83872.pdf . This document is a large PDF file (over 900 pages) and will take a while to download. There are HTML versions available but they do not have page numbers so it is difficult to locate these passages. The testimony of the treasury officials is found at pages 3403, 3425 and 3431. It is too long to be effectively excerpted. While it does not contain any new information, it is an interesting read. There appears to have been other testimony on this matter at other hearings including testimony from Alvin Hall, the BEP director, but I have not been able to locate it on the web. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== Reprints from the Gram? In spite of the fact that the Gram supports the wide distribution of information to numismatists, wide and free are not the same thing. Therefore, virtually everything that appears in the Gram is copyrighted material. It is copyrighted by the author or the Gram. Several publications have asked permission to reprint and were able to do so having received permission from the author and/or the Gram. Surprisingly, such restrictions are made to ENCOURAGE research and distribution of information! Probably we will discuss this in more depth in the future, but I thought that it should be stated clearly today because it relates to the first letter below. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== letters/submissions for Gram 1000 special double issue should be sent to MPCGram1000@yahoo.com Dear Gram, Today I discovered that two articles I sent in to the gram are available on the web. I am embarrassed that these articles are "out there" and I will NEVER write one again. When you cherry pick, you only talk about it to close friends and not tell the world. I was nice guy and gave you material for a gram. It would much better to skip a day than subject someone to potential embarrassment. The two articles in question are my discovery of a replacement note and how I got it from the shop owner via cherry picking and also the article about the retired military officer's wife who dumped her husband's trunk at a yard sale and I subsequently cherry picked a coin shop out of 4 replacements. I think you are extremely remiss and irresponsible in 1. Publishing/allowing this stuff on the web. 2. 2. Not telling us that what ever we sent in was to be found on the web. I would have disguised the material and circumstances had I known. In fact, I would not have sent in the letters. You are responsible for immediately informing all potential contributors of the availability of gram stuff on the web. I am ******!!!! 'nuff said? Disgruntled Gramster Dear Sir, I must say that I am caught off guard by this letter?on several counts. First let me point out to readers that I sanitized the letter enough to hide the identity of the sender because I was afraid that he might be ****** that I ran the letter. However, it is a great letter because it brings up many points for discussion. In spite of the sanitization, it was clearly a candidate for publication as sent because it was sent to MPCGram. As far as I know, I have honored every request to not publish a letter, but if it comes to MPCGram, there is a high probability that it will be published. Several times I have asked senders to reconsider requests for non publication. I was a little surprised at your report that your Gram articles have appeared somewhere on the internet. I will come back to this in a moment. I have to disagree with you a little bit. Of course we were delighted to have the stories, but I think telling the stories to 400 Gram subscribers is spreading the story MUCH more than simply having the stories posted somewhere on the internet. I did as you said and did a google search in the hope of finding the offending listing. I did find it and it was interesting. It was not what I expected. What I found was a link to the article in question archived at papermoneyorld.net. The link showed up with the dealer name because that name as also in the same Gram. The fact that old Grams are archived at pmw has been mentioned in the Gram several times. The posting is done as a service to Gramsters. They are posted about two weeks late. What does the Gram community think? Editor Dear Editor, I have three of Kevin Neidy's intaglio eagle cards for the Colorodo (sic) Springs minifest left; $20 donation to the Military Scholarship Fund plus $1 postage to me.
