From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 991 Date: Saturday, August 16, 2003 11:37 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 991 Thursday/Saturday August 14/16, 2003 96 Inch Plasma TV?See Doug Did you notice that Doug?MPCWizzard?aka the Wiz and probably many other things as well was selling large screen televisions on ebay? They were at great prices too. Even on ebay, if it looks to good to be true it probably is. This was a fraud, a scam. It was not by Doug! It was done to him. Yes, Doug?s ebay account was hacked and someone fraudulently placed these items for sale! The same thing happened to MPCWorld (Schwan), but I am not sure what was offered for sale. The first that I knew of the fraud was when I tried to log into ebay and was denied. I went a little crazy, but eventually found the answer in my regular email box. Ebay had sent me a courtesy notice that I had changed my password. Since I had not changed it, I knew that something was wrong and responded to that mail. In an only slightly convoluted way ebay allowed me to actually change my password. Ebay also informed me that fraudulent items had been posted for sale on ebay under my identity and that they had killed those auctions. Then Doug had this same thing happen. I believe that Mike Cummings described a similar things several months ago. Later Doug an email from ebay that requested that Doug respond and include his password. As you can guess in this context, that was a fake message. Doug contacted ebay about this message and received the response below. It is interesting that ebay chooses to call these messages spoof. A stronger word seems appropriate. Thank you for contacting eBay's Trust & Safety Department about an email you received from an address that includes '@ebay.com' but that may not be an authentic email from eBay. We will investigate this situation immediately. Please be advised that there have been cases where people have attempted to gain access to an eBay member's personal information by sending "spoof" emails. Spoof emails intentionally give the false impression that they have been sent by eBay to solicit people to transmit their account information. Based on your inquiry to eBay's Trust and Safety Department, the email you received was likely a spoof. eBay is very concerned about spoof email and is taking prompt action to address the issue. If you think you may have entered personal information into a spoof site, we advise you to review the information at the web address below, which contains more detailed information about the following steps: http://pages.ebay.com/help/confidence/problems-identity-theft.html 1. Change your eBay password and email account password Periodically changing your password is one of the most effective ways to maintain security on any Web site. If you think there is a possibility of a breach in your account security, we strongly suggest that you begin by changing your password. 2. Forward the email to Spoof@ebay.com If you haven't already done so, please forward a copy of the email, (which will include the full header), to spoof@ebay.com . Forwarding the email will help us investigate this matter more quickly. Please do not forward the email as an attachment or alter the subject line in any way. For more information on how to identify a header, please visit: http://pages.ebay.com/help/basics/information.html 3. Protect your identity If you entered information such as your social security number or credit card numbers into a web site that you were directed to via a spoofed email, you need to take immediate action to protect your identity. The following web sites have valuable information on the steps you should take to protect yourself: eBay Help: http://pages.ebay.com/help/confidence/problems-identity-theft.html U.S. Government ID Theft Site: http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/victim.htm BBB ID Theft Site: http://www.newyork.bbb.org/identitytheft/newscams.html As we move forward with our investigation, we will contact you if we need further information. In order to dedicate resources to investigating this type of situation, please submit any other questions or concerns through our Help System, which can be accessed by clicking on the Help button at the top of any eBay page. *Please do not respond to this email as your reply will not be received. If you need to contact us again, please use the eBay Help system. We appreciate your efforts in helping keep eBay a safe online marketplace. Regards, eBay Trust & Safety Team MFC Update By Al Glaser Since Fest IV we have had no fewer than 4 mini-Fests, an annual ANA Military Money Seminar, and in the next week our third Tex-Fest. This has created over 200 varieties of new MFC. While this is exciting for those who collect and compile research on MFC, it has become increasingly more difficult to keep track of and to receive the data on serial numbers and varieties since many first timers are attending mini-Fests. Our thanks should go out to Dick and Loretta Freyser for organizing the Baltimore mini-Fest as well as Russ Walsh for surprising everyone in attendance on Saturday with a fabulous set of Emergency Military Fest Certificates in four denominations. I was not able to make Baltimore, so I still have not seen the notes in person. I would especially like to see the serial number 7 notes from the Saturday mini-Fest...did I mention I collect serial number 7 MFC notes? I know it is the summer and free time seems to be at a premium, so I must apologize to the Gram staff for not sending in more articles. You spend put in a lot of time and effort getting this newsletter out for our entertainment, the readership needs to support your efforts. I also need the support of those who attend the Fests, mini-Fests and the Seminars. Military Fest Certificates have become a very entertaining aspect of these get-togethers. In fact, I know a number of you out there will attend a show that was not originally on your schedule, once you hear there will be a mini-Fest. My enthusiasm for MFC prompted me to begin researching MFC and put it into book form. With the incredible help from a few Festers we have been able to document the majority of varieties of MFC and record the serial and position numbers of thousands of notes. The ability to obtain this information was easier when there were only two to three events a year with most of the same faces attending. Now with so many events, so many new faces, the ability to document all the serial numbers and varieties cannot be done by the few. I NEED YOUR HELP! I really don't think I'm asking for much. A couple minutes of your time. You make it a point to show up for your pay...you should make it a point to be a part of this project. Anyone interested in being a part of this project can send serial and position number information to the following email address: thetrader.2@cox.net . I will be attending the barbeque in Dallas, thanks again Doug for getting things organized, let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I am hoping to have update pages for the MFC book from Fest IV through Baltimore available (if I can get examples of the notes from those in attendance to scan) at the barbeque. Since these updates are not for sale, please make sure you have some MFC trading material...did I mention I collect 7's? =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== See the letters section below for commentary about how Gram 991 got out of order. As you can imagine, the experience with ebay above was frustrating at best. It was also dangerous. The danger lies mostly with ebay. As wildely successful as ebay has been, this sort of activity could bring it down. It is with good cause that ebay calls the section in charge of fixing these problems Trust & Safety Team. You might know that it is virtually impossible to find a phone number to call someone at ebay (rumor has it that ebay has three workers, Meg (chair) and two geeks). By digging deep in the ebay help menus, Doug (Wiz) was able to find a place for live chat with a problem solver. I asked him for the link to this chat function. He reported that there is not even a link to it, but it is still worth remembering that such a place does exist. On another subject. If you are going to be at the Dallas MPC barbeque, and want to be paid, be sure to take a show ?n tell item. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== letters/submissions for Gram 1000 special double issue should be sent to MPCGram1000@yahoo.com Dear Gram, So, did the power storm take Gram 991 with it as well? Sparky Dear Gram, Please resend Gram 991. I only received 990 and 992. Don Dear Editor, Gram 991 is MIA. Wiz Dear Gramsters, As you know, I have tried before to inflate our numbers by cheating you out of a Gram or two. You would think that I would learn that I cannot get it past you, so here is your 991. We have had skips before. Possibly there have been duplicates, and there certainly have been fractional numbers, but I think that this is the first number to be issued out of order. Of course someone will tell me if this is not correct. Often when I complete a Gram, I start on the next one. Then the next day I can insert breaking news and send it out. Without going into detail, when the power came back on, I saw that the last Gram was 991 so I created 992. The problem was that the 991 that I saw was the started, but unfinished/mailed 991. Editor My Dear Freditor, Joe wrote about his having traded me a $5 Series 031 for my unsigned remainder $10.- but I'll be very happy to sign his note anytime, and it is immediately valid for $10 in trade at my table during CSNS next year here in Milwaukee- so it is technically an unsigned remainder right now (or is it? see below paragraph) but that situation is very easily remedied. I do not want Joe to feel I got the better of him on that deal- he got a $10- and I got only a $5. I will also say that he very generously offered me my choice of a $1, $5 or $10 of that series, and I took the $5 as I liked its design- but I still need the other two (hint). By the way, can you have an "unsigned remainder" from a group of notes prepared for issue that has not yet had their time of issue? Isn't a remainder something left over AFTER the issue is done with? All the Milwaukee notes are thus potentially totally alive until after the CSNS in 2004. Just to clarify the situation a bit (or muddy it up more, depending on your assessment). Neil S. Dear Neil, I like your scheme. If I had done it, the notes would have been redeemable at the 2224 for at least the 2024 CSNS show. Regarding the hint, if Joe offered you a $1 and a $10 in trade, you know where some are available. Other Festers may have some too.
