From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 994 Date: Sunday, August 17, 2003 11:00 PM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 994 Monday August 18, 2003 Comments on Most Things by Robert Drew I think we have all been frustrated by eBay at one time or another, and it is hard to contact them. I bought a Beginner's Guide to eBay and in it, are two telephone number's to reach eBay. (800-322-9266 or 408-369-4830).Sometimes it's easier to call and explain the problem than to type for a half hour. I am all for supporting a worthy cause, I like many of you helped Joe with his ride for MS. I may be feeling a little suspicious lately, because for the past two months, I get a couple of emails a week, asking me to help in one of the infamous Nigerian scams. If this request to help the orphanage could be veified than I would not mind helping, I just would not want to have us all spend time and money, if it's not for real. One thing the orphanage needs to do is get a new activities director. If I was a child in a orphanage and got to take a trip 200 kilometers away, I would want to visit something else besides another orphanage. Once its verified that it is a legitimate I will be the first (maybe the first) to give $20.00. If all the gramsters give a little, we can probably buy enough food for a year. We may be able to set up a tax deductible foundation to give the money to. I know it is been two weeks since the ANA convention but I was not able to get into my email for a few days. This was my first major ANA convention and all I can say is WOW!! Even though I am not a collector of those shiny round metallic things, seeing all 5 of the 1913 Liberty Head nickels was quite a sight. There were so many tables set up for the exhibitors it was the size of a local coin show itself. I would rate most of the exhibits amazing to unbelivable. I would second Joe's review of John Whitney's exhibit on Ways to Collect Paper Money. I do not think you would be able to see that many scarce to rare notes in almost all Unc condition in any one place ever again. If you are a paper money collector or even if you collect those round things, there are two things you need to do if you are serious about your hobby. One is to attend a summer seminar in Colorado Springs, the other is to attend a ANA convention. Both will increase your enthusiasm about your hobby 1000% as well as increase your knowledge. At Baltimore not counting the United States they were 18 foreign mints & government agencies and they were at least 400 + dealers, suppliers, grading services, publication company's and even our current favorite topic, eBay had a table as well. They were also 20 + clubs with information t ables as well. The only one that I noticed was not there was the editor of the world famous gram. He only missed the most exciting event in numismatic history, second only to the Port Clinton Fest. The next events to get ready for are MPC Fest V Mar 5-7, the ANA National Money Show in Portland OR Mar 26-28,(The Money Show is held in the spring and is about 1/2 the size of the Aug convention) ANA Summer Seminar June 26-July 2 and July 3 - July 9th, then the 113th ANA National Convention held in Pittsburgh. Start saving now, sell of your extra's from your collection, have a yard sale, get a second job, do whatever it takes to make one or more or these events. You will have a great time, increase your knowledge, make new friends and did I mention have a great time. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== We have an interesting situation on which I need your advice. A Gramster wrote me about a lot on ebay. Here is a link to the item: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3039859708&category=3434&rd=1 Here is the text of the item. 1942 GERMANY WW II GERMAN MPC & ALLIED CFTS AUXILIARY PAYMENT CERTIFICATES, GERMAN ARMED FORCES. INTENDED AS LEGAL TENDER WITHIN THE SERVICES DURING WORLD WAR II. THE NOTES WERE WORTH 10 TIMES THE FACE VALUE IF SPENT IN MILITARY CHANNELS. THIS GROUP INCLUDES PICK M-32 - 1 REICHSPFENNIG, M-34 - 10 REICHSPFENNIG AND THE SCARCE M37 - 2 REICHMARK. THE NOTES AT RIGHT ARE GENUINE NOTES AND THE ONES ON THE LEFT ARE ALLIED (U.S., BRITISH) COUNTERFEITS. AN UNUSUAL GROUP WITH LOTS OF HISTORY AND QUITE SCARCE TO FIND TOGETHER. ALL NOTES ARE CRISP UNCIRCULATED. The Gramster said that he had never heard of Allied counterfeits of these notes. I replied that these fakes are almost certainly modern, well, fakes. We have no information on Allied counterfeits, and these fakes have been seen commonly. Initially the 1 rpf was seen, then the others. I wrote to the seller (twice, possibly three times) using the ask the seller a question function at ebay. He finally wrote back that the consignor insisted that they are as described and that he had had them since WWII or some similar story. I intended to write this story before the auction ended, but forgot/procrastinated (fire away). I was going to get insistent with the seller, but it is a bit late for that. One idea was that if we did not get cooperation to get 400 Gramsters to write inquiries. Now that the auction is finished, the situation is slightly different, but not completely. I am confident that this was a deceptive, possibly fraudulent auction. Can and/or should we do something about it to protect the integrity of our hobby? Even if we should do something, what should it be? Those are the questions that I ask you. Help please. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== letters/submissions for Gram 1000 special double issue should be sent to MPCGram1000@yahoo.com Dear Gram, Great Idea Concerning The Charity.
