From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 995 Date: Tuesday, August 19, 2003 7:02 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 995 Tuesday August 19, 2003 Those Fakes by Joe Boling Let's talk about the eBay lot with the so-called Allied counterfeits of the Behelfzahlungsmittel notes, the subject of the editorial in gram 994. I have a reprint/fake/replica of the 2RM note, which I obtained in 1999. The dealer I got it from had evidently had for quite a while before that, in his personal collection. It is one color, dull pink, pretty close to the one in the eBay lot. It is printed on low-grade wove paper (mottled but not watermarked when held to the light), by line lithography, and is definitely not made using "modern" technology. However, even though the illustrations on the eBay page are pretty small, it does not appear to be the same production as the one offered there - that one is brighter and has better contrast across its length. The portions that are dark blue on the original are practically invisible on mine, but not so on the eBay piece. So it appears that those are replicas from a different source than the one I have. The 50 rpfg propaganda piece that I have (discussed in gram 844) is not on the same paper as my replica 2RM note. Recall that the propaganda piece is watermarked. It is also on wove paper, but the paper is more uniform and more dense than the 2RM replica. Naturally, I would love to examine the pieces that were sold on eBay. If any reader knows the winning bidder (tizzian500), please put him/her in touch with me (joeboling@aol.com). If any of you have examples of these replicas (or other replicas of these notes), please let me examine them also. As for the issue of warning buyers about the potential for such lots being modern productions, my understanding is that eBay applies stiff sanctions to registered eBay users who communicate with bidders outside the auction process. I suppose someone who is not a user could do so without much risk, but if you intend to continue to use eBay, you have to be careful about who you offend. Stamp collectors have this problem continually; I see articles in Linn's about philatelic fakes on eBay about once a month. I have not forgotten about my promise to talk about the new exhibit format for ANA spring conventions, but I have not written the material for ANA yet. Have patience. More on Those Fakes Jim Downey I also wrote to the seller of these items to ask what his source was that the copies were contemporary counterfeits. He failed to respond. I have seen the copy of the 2RM piece on a number of occasions. They first surfaced in the 1990s. Even though I can offer no proof otherwise, I do not believe the items were made by the Allies. Why would they have counterfeited military notes that had a limited circulation? I could see making copies with propaganda messages, but that would be about it. I have made it a practice of notifying sellers when they have incorrect information in their listings or if they suggest the notes are more valuable than they are. Usually, they are receptive because they know little about the material in the first place. A recent example involved a listing that indicated that BAFSV were used in the Falklands. Like the present case, the seller indicated that it was what he had been told. He did correct the listing. I have also received a few negative responses from sellers such as a gentleman who insisted that the notes he had listed, including two pieces of AMC yen, were taken from a dead Japanese soldier in the Philippines. There is a fine line between sales puffery and fraud. Fraud requires that the seller know that their representation was false. The seller of this item may very well have been told the copies were contemporary counterfeits rather than modern fakes. Once their authenticity is questioned, however, the seller has an obligation to find out the truth and correct their representations if they are indeed false. There is little that can be done about these matters. Ebay is not likely to be very aggressive where sellers only "repeat what they were told." It would be next to impossible to keep track of sellers and their listings to determine whether a seller makes it a habit of doing this. =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== May I brag a little bit? I bought an item on ebay that I really like and want to share with you. The easiest way to show it to you is to give you the link to the ebay auction. Have a look at it before you read my comments. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3039833940&category=376&rd=1 First, it came in yesterday and I like it more than I thought that I would it is very nice. You know why I was/am interested, right? I just love the EA Wright Bank Note Company. It is one of those many obscure little bank note companies that operated from about 1850 to 1950. Of particular interest to us is the fact that EAW printed 21 different notes for six French colonies during World War II. They are some of the most distinctive notes of the war period. I have been very interested in the company since 1972. In 1977 I was fortunate to get to interview EA Wright III who was the final Wright to operate the company and who supervised its sale. That interview became the basis of a pamphlet The Paper Money of the E. A. Wright Bank Note Company. If you want to know more of the story, try to find a copy of the pamphlet. Otherwise, wait and I will probably get around to telling more of the story here. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== letters/submissions for Gram 1000 special double issue should be sent to MPCGram1000@yahoo.com Hi Philippine Numismatists, Just a note that the current Mailbid Sale ends in less than two weeks on Sunday, 31 August. If per chance you did not receive a list through the mail, please let me know quickly as there is still time to mail one to you. Or you can check my web page: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/cjcpi and email me your bids. I have just posted both sections of the mailbid sale and it contains the current high bids I have received through 17 August. I plan to post high bids one more time probably on the 28th or 29th of August. There are many lots that have not received a minimum bid yet. Those of you that were able to attend the Philippine Collectors Forum (PCF) had a great time according to all reports I have received. A summary of what went on is contained on my web page. Also, check page 71 of the latest edition of Coin World (Aug 25th) as they had a staff writer there to document the great meeting. If I can find collectors interested in doing presentations, we will plan another session at the ANA show in Pittsburgh next July and San Jose in 2005. Let me know your interest. At the end of the talks at PCF, I gave each presenter a just produced copy of the "Report of the Special Mission To the Philippines" printed at the Manila Bureau of Printing in 1921. I recently purchased a very fragile copy of this little known historical report which details the people, economy, and banking system as of the early 1920s and outlines the country's problems. I had a limited number of copies made. Within the report was an interesting color map showing how the Mission members traveled the length of the country by auto, boat, horse, carabao, etc. The document is legal size and 27 pages long. (I have a few extra copies available at $15 plus postage.) Look forward to hearing from you on any topic of interest. Thanks, Ray Czahor Cookie Jar Collectibles Box 597 Columbia, MD 21045 Phone/Fax: 301-604-9225 e-mail: cjcpi@comcast.net Dear Gram, As for the problem of getting the Gram - As I reported several times before I left for ANA, I was getting TWO copies every day.  I thought that might be solved by the time I got back from the big show BUT noooooo!!  Up through today I am still getting 2 a day and that added to the 879 e-mails I had waiting for me when I got back.  And you know I just had to read BOTH copies to be sure I had not missed something. Think we can fix it now?  My eyes are almost burned out.   You are still doing a good job.  Best wishes from  -   Leo (eye strained) May Dear PM, In addition to a flip comment about not charging for the extra Gram, I must say that the staff is not very motivated to try to fix your problem. If you were not using AOL, we might try. Your duplicate came about when the same staff worked very hard to defeat AOLs difficult spam policies. Given the nature of that problem (especiallay at AOL) we just cannot see trying to fix this problem then have you drop to zero one of these days so that we have to try to unfix it. Give the extra Gram to charity? Editor Dear Esteemed Editor, I am staring at a stack of paper money and related items donated to the IBNS by several people at the recent ANA Convention in Baltimore. I am not as bad as you at forgetting things, but I must be getting closer. My forgetting concerns one packet of military pieces donated by a Gramster for the IBNS Bank Note Program where I give a free piece of financial paper to school-age children who attend ANA Shows and Conventions. I can remember he is a Gramster but for some reason I cannot remember his name. I really want to know because I always like to send a thank you email and/or letter, but maybe he wanted to be anonymous and this will be thank you enough. Thank you sir. The Master Sergeant Daniel P.S. I gave pieces to 285 school-age children, and one to a good-looking woman who I had to thank for putting up with me with a free bank note. Howard A. Daniel III Howard@SEAsianTreasury.com Dear Howard, I had a very insightful comment, but I forgot what it was.
