From: "MPCgram" To: Subject: MPCGram 996 Date: Thursday, August 21, 2003 12:20 AM =========================================== MPC GRAM =========================================== Covering the entire World of Military Numismatics Series 004 - Number 996 Wednesday August 20, 2003 WestFest I By Al Glaser WestFEST I We will be organizing a Mini-FEST at the Long Beach Coin, Stamp and Collectible Expo. Long Beach Convention center September 19th and 20th. I know we have a great many MPC enthusiasts hailing from California and surrounding states who attend the Long Beach show. Only a few have made the long journey east to attend a Fest or mini-Fest. Here is your chance to see up close and personal what some of the MPC/MFC crazies out there are constantly talking about in the Gram. Help and ideas are welcome, we can do a Friday and Saturday event or one or the other. A show and tell item or a MPC/MFC story is a must in order to receive pay. YES...BRING YOUR PAYBOOKS. Those without paybooks will receive hazard pay for being able to negotiate the traffic and construction zones enroute to the show and attending the mini-Fest. Your comments are welcome at thetrader.2@cox.net. Please let the Gram know if you are able to attend. More info to follow when we have some! =========================================== Editorial/opinion =========================================== It is uncanny. I tossed a few comments back at Leo because he was complaining about receiving two Grams. Part of my point was that the computer operations have been fairly stable over the past few months. Well, that very Gram gave me trouble! Indeed, it is possible that some of you did not receive 995 (especially if you are an AOL user, let me know). Activities have started in Dallas. Reports are in that lot viewing was heavy on Wednesday. Lyn Knight and Joel Shafer were awarded challenge coins for their service to the hobby. For those of you who will be in Dallas, you know what that means! Challenge early, challenge often. I think that it is wonderful that Al is stepping forward to hold a CalFest. When he first mentioned this, I thought that he could use the meeting as a political rally if he could get his fee submitted in time to be on the California ballot. I am confident that if all California MPC collectors could be gathered behind one candidate (Al), we could have our first MPC governor. We will try to have a Gram after the auction on Thursday. It might be the Thursday Gram, or it might be an extra, but we will try. =========================================== MAIL CALL =========================================== letters/submissions for Gram 1000 special double issue should be sent to MPCGram1000@yahoo.com Dear Gram, As long as we are discussing upcoming events, please do not forget the IBNS London Congress on October 4 and 5 at the Trade Union Congress hall, two blocks from the British Museum. This is a relatively small event compared to Memphis or Maastricht, but in the past there has been no shortage of WWII items on the floor. It is definitely a fun event. Besides, do you need a better excuse to visit London in October? It is not too late to expedite a passport or get a decent airfare within the 21-day advance period. If you have a paybook, bring it along and you shall be paid. If you do not have a paybook, find a challenge coin. Anyone who presents their (own, personal, not someone else's) challenge coin shall qualify for partial pay. If you do not have a challenge coin, get one now! They should not be difficult to find. Marcus Turner Dear Gram, I can and do attest that"Who Has Fours" was at ANA. I looked over my table to see all 4 of his eyes looking back at me. (I had my glasses off at the time.) I was also at ANA but did not get any of the 'monies' that all the others got because I had to man my General Quarters station when those events were taking place. I would hope that some kind of arrangement could be made for us that would love to attend the events but are prevented from doing so by the press of 'business'. After all, it is my General Quarters station that Festers come to dig out some of the goodies they go home with. By the way, I will have some interesting new Philippine (some notes I have now seen before) and concentration camp stuff with me on my next trip. (We leave here on Monday headed to a show in Ohio.) That's right, Fred, I am headed your way. By the way, Fred, have you recovered from the blackout yet? Have to get back to work. Best wishes - Paymaster Dear Marcus, Is this a mini Fest? Editor Dear Esteeemed Editor, Several people a month request I look at a particular eBay numismatic or exonumia item and tell them if it is authentic. Sometimes I can see whether it is a copy, counterfeit or authentic and I give them my opinion. When I cannot tell from the picture/description, I send an email to the owner and request the weight or something else to assist me. Nine out of ten owners favorably respond to me and the rest just ignore me. When I can give my opinion, I give it to the requester and the owner. Most of my opinions have produced some excellent comments and results, but there are a few that could burn the print off your computer's screen. In my field of Southeast Asia, there are a goodly number of copies made to sell to collectors (and the greedy). Many of them eventually come onto the U.S. and European numismatic markets. When I identify them at a show or convention, the good and bad responses are about the same as I receive on eBay, so eBay is not much different (for me) than the real world. But I have found that the non-dealer owners of militaria are much, much more likely to send me a very favorable reply to my correction and/or comment about their SE Asia special operations, intelligence, psywar and related items. In a good number of cases, they have withdrawn the item and kept it for their collections, when I told them it was authentic and scarce to rare. I agree with the writer that the eBay marketplace is there for eBay to lose. Ebay needs to allocate much more money from their substantial profits to fix their problems, and they are fixable. If they do not get a handle on them, there will appear another eBay-lookalike to take their business away from them. Is not capitalism and a free market wonderful? The Master Sergeant Daniel Dear Gram, I was unable to use the link for the EA Wright story. Any other way to see what you bought? Paymaster Dear PM, Well, I am very tempted to blame your problem on AOL, but it does not really matter what the problem was. I suppose I can scan it and post it at PMW. That will have to wait at least a week however. The good news is I guess that I can use that as an excuse to talk about EA Wright again!
